Postdoctoral Fellow at the Netherlands Cancer Institute

At the department of Cell Biology II, Farid - with the help of many excellent co-workers- is working on the development of chemical approaches toward protein conjugates. Farid El Oualid studied Chemistry at Leiden University (2000) and earned his PhD in Chemistry from the same university (2005). After obtaining a Marie-Curie Fellowship, he spent 3 years as a post-doctoral researcher at Oxford University (2005 – 2008). In the group of Huib Ovaa at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Farid has developed a new chemical protein-ligation technology that forms the basis of the NKI-AvL spin-off UbiQ (Huib Ovaa is co-inventor and co-founder). This start-up company develops research tools for fundamental (cancer) research and drug development in the Ubiquitin Proteasome Pathway.
Farid El Oualid published 10 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals and is named as an inventor on 3 patents/patent applications. His research is financially supported by the European Commission, a NGI Life Sciences Pre-Seed Grant and a NPC II Valorisation Voucher. In the Department of Cell Biology II, Farid is also responsible for chemicals management and safety.
Farid El Oualid was one of the speakers of Postdoc Retreat 2010 in Kapellerput - Heeze. Together with Koen Verhoef (Manager of Technology Transfer Office at the NKI) he gave insights into how his research project turned into a spin-off company.
