After finalization of his PhD thesis he was was a post-doc for 7 years at the University Medical Center Groningen at 2 different departments. He joined PRA in 2008 as a Project Manager /Study Director at the Bioanalytical Lab, PRA intl. Assen - Large Molecule Group.

 

Frans van Huizen

Frans van HuizenSenior Medical Writer at Genzyme

After completing his PhD at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, Frans van Huizen moved to Canada for postdoctoral research on receptor plasticity in the brain.  This postdoc was followed by two periods in the Drug Discovery Units of Organon and Organon Teknika for research on new anti-depressants and muscle relaxants.  He then moved out of the laboratory to become a medical writer and project manager in a clinical research organization (CRO).

 

Danielle Curfs PhD

Daniƫlle Curfs (born 1976) obtained her MSc in Environmental Health Sciences in 2000 at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. In 2004 she obtained her PhD in Life Sciences and Health (Departments of Health Risk Analysis & Toxicology and Pathology, University of Maastricht) specialising in the role of environmental carcinogens in atherogenesis.

 

Maarten Janmaat PhD

Maarten Janmaat studied Biology at the University of Utrecht, during which he performed an internship in Dundee, Scotland. In 2001 he started as PhD student at the VUmc, working on ErbB receptors as target for anticancer therapy. During his postdoc projects in the same department at the VUmc and subsequently in the AMC, he actively worked on his career development. In 2006 he did a career development project with a personal coach, and in 2008 he joined the PCDI retreat and the BioBusiness Summerschool. In 2009 he joined Merus, a small biotechnology company working on mixtures of monoclonal antibodies.

 

Maarten Honing PhD

After obtaining his Bachelor in clinical-chemistry (1981) and Immunochemistry (1983), he started his Masters at the UvA (1984), besides his full-time position as technician at the Central Laboratory for Clinical Chemistry at the VUMC. Following his graduation in 1991 in Analytical Sciences with Prof H. Poppe, he performed his PhD focused on Analytical MS at the CSIC Research Institute in Barcelona (Spain), in collaboration with the VU.

 

Niki Georgiou PhD

After obtaining her BSc in Biochemistry from UMIST, Manchester, England and MSc Food Biotechnology from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Niki Georgiou pursued the position of Junior Researcher at the Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology Division of Utrecht University working on Aflatoxin decontamination by fungi. After 3 years she joined the IRAS (Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences) for one year before starting her PhD in 1997 on Iron chelation and HIV-1 replication at the University Medical Centre Utrecht.

 

Wendy Mackus PhD

I may still have a future in academia but I know now that I have other options as well. Tenure isn't the be-all-end-all of a career in the life sciences. When I first realised this I suddenly lost all fear doubt about the future. My career at Genmab has given me peace of mind.

 

Karin Havenith PhD

When she first started to work for Genmab Karin spent a lot of time in the lab conducting applied science. She has now moved to more buro-work, thinking up and evaluating applied science. Her current research project is coming to an end, and the final product is ready to go to market. 'In my job I get all the science without the networking and politics of academia. Yes, I really fit into this place more than I could ever have imagined.

 

Joost Bakker PhD

An academic career, with all that it entails, wasn't what Joost Bakker PhD was after. In industry he also took some time to find out what he really wanted. He's now going down the alternative science career path at Genmab. About his current job Joost says: 'my non-scientific skills finally get the attention they deserve.
