Workshop session 3

Thursday 22 April 13.30 – 16.30

Workshop ‘Negotiation’

Different people have different objectives which they try to overcome through negotiation. This occurs everywhere: in academia, as well as in the family. The question always seems to be whether the negotiation should be soft or hard. The hard negotiator always wants to win, turns the negotiation into a competition, invites hard responses to his hard actions and ends up in a deadlock.

If this type of negotiator wins the argument, he may lose a valuable relationship. The soft negotiator avoids personal conflict; he makes concessions to maintain the relationship, but in the end feels unsatisfied with the results achieved. In this training we will look at both relations and results, explore different strategies well as communication styles. Participants will practise their negotiating skills in a real life case by:

•    Negotiating game
•    Discussing strategies for negotiating
•    Theory and Questionnaire Conflict styles
•    Theory negotiations, basic principles
•    Real life case, roleplay

Workshop ‘Logics behind the writing of a grant proposal - writing for an evaluator’ FULLY BOOKED

‘I got an email from Brussels. It is official! I got the grant!’, the successful applicant shouts with a smile on her face.

The idea was there for a long time. There was a struggle to give it a structure. How will they know that I am the right person and that my idea is great? Months of hard work, many concepts, discussions with colleagues brought her finally to the point of applying for funding.
But who would support my research? Finally she found a right funding organisation. She even found a call for proposals. Hmm.., what now? Reading through all these guidelines, boring documents (while thinking…I wish someone else could do this for me), she finally got the grip. Hmm.., but how to fit everything in only 15 pages?....

…at this workshop we discuss the secrets behind forming your idea in a worth reading proposal. Which logical flow you need to follow to form a well structured proposal as well as discuss common mistakes that people make when requesting funding for their research.

We will not discuss what details on types of funding. This workshop will give you an insight into how to turn your idea into a well written and effective research proposal.

Geeft diverse cursussen over academisch leiderschap. Als docent betrokken bij de landelijke cursussen van het Nederlands Instituut voor de Biologie (NIBI) over onderzoeksmanagement.

Workshop: ‘Feedback’

Feedback matters. People won't get great at their jobs unless you do a great job of giving them feedback. And you won’t get great at your job unless you receive feedback. But still….few of us enjoy hearing about our shortcomings, and few of our bosses and colleagues look forward to describing them.
In this workshop you will learn how to give feedback in a way that will make people listen and learn, and to ask for and receive feedback, so you can keep getting better in what you are doing.  One caution: There will be role playing, and you will get real life feedback in this workshop!

Workshop leader: Marie-Claire Dassen

Marie-Claire Dassen (1963) is an experienced business consultant, trainer and coach.  She helps organisations, teams and individuals in making the best possible fit between tasks, demands, possibilities and ambitions. Her work is based on her background in group dynamics, organisational development and coaching techniques. Her style can be described as practical, personal and confrontational with a twist of humour. She is looking forward to getting your feedback at the end of the workshop.

Workshop: ‘Strategic behaviour: The influence and effects of non-verbal behaviour’ FULLY BOOKED

In your job, you often have to deal with different personalities, behaviours and situations. Knowledge about how people behave in working relationships and how to act effectively is crucial to successful collaboration and achieving results.

Nearly 70% of our communication is non-verbal. Non-verbal behaviour has to do with body language and voice tone. For example, can we trust a person? Is he or she capable? Do I come across as convincing? What emotions are expressed, what are their effects on the relationship, and how is the balance of power perceived? What productive or non-productive communication patterns do I display? Being able to motivate others, dealing with feedback and managing the perceptions of others are important skills. After all, the eye does not see itself.

The purpose of this workshop is to experience and become aware of the effects of non-verbal behaviour – your behaviour and that of others. Each exercise begins with a short introduction and ends with an evaluation of the interaction.

Program:
•    Introduction: Non-verbal behaviour
•    To follow and to lead in communication
•    The effects of emotions and moods
•    The influence and effects of convictions on behaviour
•    Dominant behaviour and acquiring authority
•    Personal presence and feedback
