Postdoc position: check!

After a long period of preparations, planning and excitiment to find a proper postdoc lab and arrange a visit, I can finally say: it was all worth it!!! At the end of my trip, I was very fortunate to choose between the two labs of my first choice :)

Philly, the City of Brotherly Love

My first job interview was at the Yale University and the second one in Philadelphia at University of Pennsylvania (Upenn). My visiting schedule at the UPenn was somehow different that in Yale. The night before my visit to the lab, the PI from UPenn arranged for me to have a dinner with some of the labmembers. I must say that this resulted in a very good first impression and me being less nervous about my presentation the next day. Both visits basically consisted of me giving a seminar about my previous work as a graduate student in the Netherlands, followed by several conversations with labmembers. People in both labs were enthusiastic about my seminar and about my work. I got the chance to discuss with people what they do, how this is related to my work and my future plans. At the end of both visits, the PI’s told me that they are really positive about my work, that they think I would fit within the exsisting group, and that therefore they would like to have me as a postdoc in their lab. However, while the PI at Upenn already had a funding to employ me, the PI at Yale appreciated if I could bring my own funding.

One of the important things I learned was that it is really important to be prepared for such a visit; I had read most of the papers published within the last year in the labs I visited. At least reading the abstract from the papers published already makes it easier to show your interest in what your conversation partners do; at least you already have a subject to discuss. Second, it was helpful that prior to my trip, I have made a list of things that were important for me in my future lab (equipment, funding, number of publications and journals where they are published, future perspectives of the postdoctoral fellows, collaborations with other labs, PI and his involvement in the lab, but also surroundings of the university and the town where it was located). I was determined to discuss these subjects with everyone I talked to in order to make the right decision.

However, first impressions really seem to be important. Philadelphia felt like home from the beginning. I had a very positive feeling about the lab, the people in the lab and the PI. Everything I had expected in my future working place was there. Besides, UPenn is a nice place to work as a postdoc and it is highly ranked in the list of the best universities and medical schools in the USA. Therefore, I think Upenn is good surrounding to get a proper training in order to develop myself as a scientist. Another important advantage of the lab in Upenn was that there was enough funding in the lab; this way I would not depend on my own grant from the Netherlands. And last but not least, Philadelphia is a great city with a broad range of cultural and social activities; vivid town is essential for me in order to work productively. Making the right choice was not too difficult…

Looking back, I realize that the first step in shaping my career was really important, namely sending an email to the PI’s and showing my motivation and enthusiasm, both in my email and during my visits. My motto “no guts, no glory” worked! I am really looking forward to starting my new job in Philly next year!! But first things first: finishing my thesis before the end of this year!!

Hi Virginia,

First of all: Congrats on your new job! Well done!!! 4h needs a lot of patience and a lot of data to discuss as well!!

Second: I am so glad you found my tips useful and that they helped you at least a little bit. :))

I am also looking for an apartment at the moment, got some usefull websites from my future collegues and the best one to check is www.craigslist.com, as I understood from most people. The rent is at least around 1100 dollars, if you are looking for one bedroom apartment in downtown...I think it's a bit expensive (to you probably not, since London is not very cheap eather), but still I think it's worth to pay a bit more, but to feel comfortable and close to where everything's happening ;) But what kind of bad reviews about housing did you read when you got back home? From people who used to live in the apartments you visited? Did you visit those with your friends or with a real estate agent??

Patricia, hopefully you have some good tips about what the best way is to start looking?? Should we get in touch with a real estate agent and should we pay for their service? Or do you thing checking the creglist should be enough to start with??
Virginia, you too good luck with everything! Did you start your Visa application already? I am planning to put some tips about that on my next blog....we'll keep in touch!

Hi Sabina!

Great blog, congratulations on getting the job!!! Thanks for all the tips, I read it before I went over to Philly for an interview and it really helped :)

I had a priminary (>4h!) interview via skype, during which I presented some of my data from my PhD, before going there for a long weekend to visit the lab and meet them in person (I'm curently in London, but I'm originally from Belgium).

Philly seems like a great city! I'm really looking forward to going there, I start on 1st March. I am not looking forward to moving tho...I have accumulated so much stuff over the past 4 years!

Have you found a place to live yet? I'd be really interested in getting any tips (from Patricia?) because I am also looking for somewhere downtown. I visited a couple of apartments while I was there, found it amazing, but was very disappointed to read bad reviews on the net after I got back...

Thanks, and good luck with everything!
Virginia

Hey Patricia,

Thanks for the offer...it is indeed great. My only concern is the expensive housing; any idea's about where to start and what the best strategy is to find a convenient, though not too expensive, place arount downtown???

Hey Sabina,
Congratulations !
I have lived in Philly for 2 years during my PhD and I agree with you that it is a great city. Besides, it is so close to other great cities such as NY and DC ! You will love it, for sure! And although the winter is cold, it is not as rainy as here :)
UPENN is in fact great. Research in many areas is strong. You have many seminars and scientific events going on all the time, and get to meet really interesting people.
The campus is great and offers a lot, apart from science... from gym to dance lessons to music and dance presentations...
Anyway... good luck and let me know if you have any curiosity about the city you want to know.. i might be able to help :)

Hi Jeroen,

You are absolutely right! It is always good to apply for your own funding and I will do this as well, even if it's not essential, since there is enought funding in the lab I am going to. I still want to do this for the same reasons as you mentioned, to practice how to write a grant, but also to be sligtly more independent (althought this is not a garantee). It is true that it really forces you to think ahead about what you want to do in your next project. Will you apply for only one grant? I can imagine it gets easier after you finished one application, since you "only" have to change a few things in order to apply for another grant...that way you can increase your chances I suppose...thanks for your tips, by the way!

Hi Sabina,

Great story. Glad you found something that really fits your desires.

Despite the PI having funding, will you still try to obtain a fellowship?

I can strongly recommend this. It's good to practice grant writing. It helps you think about your project and its priorities. And it never hurts your track record if you can obtain one.

I’m struggling with writing a Rubicon fellowship right now, but I feel that due to this experience I’ll have a clearer picture of what I really want to do a soon as I start my Postdoctoral work in NY.

Jeroen
